1. Plant a Tree in Their Memory
This could be done in your backyard, or even in a public park if you wish (if you have permission to do so). Choose a species of tree that was your pet’s favorite, or that has special meaning to you. If your pet was cremated, you could even plant a tree with their ashes. This is what I have done with my recent dog that has passed and it makes me smile every time I look out to the bottom of the garden.
2. Create a Stepping Stone Pathway
This is a beautiful way to create a pet memorial garden, and it can be done even in a small space. All you need are some cement stepping stones (you can even make your own!), and potentially some paint. Use this to write your pet’s name, dates, or any other words or phrases that are special to you. If a pathway is a bit much, it can just be a singular memorial stone that you paint and place with pride in your garden.
3. Plant Their Favorite Flowers
If your pet had a favorite flower, plant it in their memory! This is a simple and lovely way to keep them close to your heart. You could also consider planting a wildflower garden, which will attract butterflies and other pollinators. Coming up with the right plant type can be tricky, so make sure to do some research on what flowers will grow best in your area.
4. Make a Birdbath or Birdfeeder
If your pet loved spending time outdoors watching the birds, this is a great way to memorialize them. You can buy birdbaths and bird feeders specifically designed for gardens, or get creative and repurpose something you already have.
5. Build a Bench
This is a great idea if you have the space for it. A bench is a perfect place to sit and reflect on all the happy memories you shared with your pet. It can also be used by visitors to your garden, which will help keep your pet’s memory alive. Then you can engrave the bench with your pet’s name, dates, or any other words or phrases that are special to you.

6. Create a Water Feature
Again, this could be as simple as a small fountain or birdbath, or something more elaborate like a koi pond. If your pet loved spending time near water, this is a beautiful way to remember them. Plus, the sound of running water is incredibly soothing, and it will create a serene atmosphere in your garden.
7. Plant an Herbal Garden
If your pet liked to nibble on your herbs, why not plant a memorial garden full of them? This is a great way to keep their memory alive while also being practical. You can use the herbs you grow in your cooking, or even dry them and make your own tea blends. Plus, it’s always nice to have a fragrant garden that attracts bees and other pollinators.
8. Fill It With Statues or Ornaments
If you have a smaller space, or just prefer a more decorative garden, fill it with statues or ornaments that remind you of your pet. This could be anything from a simple birdhouse to something that reminds you of your pet. It’s a great way to add some personality to your garden, and it will make it feel like a truly special place.
9. Wind Chimes
Wind chimes are a beautiful addition to any garden, and they can also be very meaningful. Wind chimes are incredibly soothing, and they’ll help you to feel close to your pet when you hear them. Choose a set of chimes that has special meaning to you, or that reminds you of your pet. You could even have them engraved with your pet’s name or dates.
10. Plant Pots
If you don’t have space for a full memorial garden, or you just want something more low-maintenance, consider planting pots in your pet’s memory. This is a great way to add a personal touch to your home, and you can even take them with you if you move.
11. Night Lights
If you want to keep your pet’s memory alive even at night, consider adding some night lights to your garden. You can buy solar-powered lights that will automatically turn on at dusk, or you could even make your own. This is a great way to create a beautiful and peaceful space in your garden that you can enjoy even after the sun goes down.
12. Fairy Gardens
If you’re looking for a more whimsical way to memorialize your pet, why not create a fairy garden? This is a great way to use up any extra space in your garden, and it’s a fun project for kids or adults. You can fill your fairy garden with all sorts of miniature plants and decorations, and it’s a great way to bring some magic into your home.
13. Memorial Plaques or Stones
If you want to keep things simple, you could consider adding a memorial plaque or stone to your garden. This is a great way to add a personal touch to your garden, and it’s a beautiful way to remember your pet. You can have the plaque or stone engraved with your pet’s name, dates, or any other words or phrases that are special to you.
Whatever type of memorial garden you choose to create, make sure it’s something that makes you happy. This is a space for you to visit and reflect on all the wonderful memories you shared with your pet.
