Glimpse Into Behavioral Patterns of Most Common Ants

Ants are small insects that are seen to be moving in colonies. You must have seen them on the ground when you go out somewhere. Sometimes, they can also make their way to your home. In Berthoud, different types of ants can be found. These little insects infest homes in search of food and seek shelter at times, too.

They usually move in large numbers, which means if you see even a single ant at some place inside your home, their entire colony must be nearby. While ants are not really known to cause any harm, they can still be pretty annoying to have around.

More than twelve thousand species of ants have been identified so far. If you have ants at your place, you need to have a basic idea about their behavioral characteristics in order to deal effectively with them.

You can also consider contacting a professional to discuss the elimination methods. There are various DIY methods you can use as well. However, you should know that they do not always help. More information can be found here.

What are some of the most common ants?

There can be many ants that are considered common; we will look at some of them here and get to know more about their behaviour:

Fire ants

These ants are reddish brown in color, which you might have already guessed by their name. Their bite can sting people. If you see them inside your home, they are most probably looking for fats and something sugary and sweet.

There are different ways that can help you control their infestation. Wherever you see their colony, you can sprinkle diatomaceous earth around. The kitchen area, window sills, and corners of your home are possible places where you might find them.

You can use boiling water to kill these ants, but make sure that you are careful while doing so. There are fire ant baits as well, which are considered very effective in dealing with these little insects.

Pavement ants

In the United States, these are the ants that are most commonly seen. Their body is somewhat brownish and black in color. There are also two spines present at the end of their body. You can get rid of them by using different techniques. We will look at some of them below:

  • Try following their trail and see where it leads. This can tell you where exactly they are coming from.
  • Ant bait stations can also be used to check the trail. The ants that are at work will take the bait. They will take the bait back to their colony and check with the queen. The queen will take it and will die. The entire population that was to come will no longer be able to show up.

Carpenter ants

These ants prefer living in moist areas. They can be found in decaying wood around your home. They may also make it inside your home. If the infestation grows further, it can spread and make it to different structures. These ants also have nesting sites that are more than one. You can control these ants by using various techniques such as:

  • Any shrubs around the house and trees should be cut and trimmed regularly. Caulk can be used on wires, and any penetration around it needs to be sealed.
  • Liquid insecticide can also be used to kill these ants. The product must be labelled with its name. You need to take that product and carefully put it to use.
  • Insecticide baits that are particularly designed for carpenter ants can also be used. You can use where these ants prefer to travel.
